A Change of Focus

I love gardening.  But sometimes I become so focused on all the outdoor projects I need to get done that I begin to lose perspective on the other things that are important to me.  Thankfully my wife is never afraid to help me adjust my focus, and did so just the other day.

So yesterday my son Liam wanted me to come play outside with him.  Not for me to work on one of the many projects I have on the go, but to just spend time with him.  So I got him changed into his bathing suit and we headed outside.  It’s been a long time since I ran through a sprinkler, but it might be even more fun now with my son than it was when I was a kid. It was such a beautiful day that I ended up grabbing my camera and taking some photos of Liam as he enjoyed the cool spray from the sprinkler.

Last night in Edmonton a tragedy occured.  A young family was enjoying the long-weekend on a local restaurant patio when a man driving an SUV crashed into it.  The two year old son was killed.  A family forever broken by a single act of recklessness and a small amount of joy removed from the world.

With this in mind I feel it’s ever so important to celebrate the joy we do have. The photos I took of Liam yesterday show unbridled joy, and I will cherish that.
